History

A Legacy of Luxury

Founded in 1923 in the heart of the Gabes Oasis on Habib Bourguiba Avenue, Hotel Atlantic Gabes established itself during the protectorate era as a jewel of colonial architecture in southern Tunisia. Welcoming a clientele of officers and wealthy travelers seduced by its modern standing for the time and its wrought-iron balconies offering breathtaking views of the city's bustle. This privileged status naturally placed it at the center of strategic stakes during World War II, notably during the Tunisian campaign in 1943, where local legend, persistent and proudly transmitted, claims that Marshal Erwin Rommel established his headquarters there, directing operations of the Mareth Line before the retreat of the Afrikakorps. Although decades have faded its former luster, transforming it into a more modest establishment, the hotel miraculously survived bombings and urban modernization to remain a silent guardian of Gabesian memory, still offering visitors today, through its long tiled corridors and patinated facade, an authentic and nostalgic immersion into the atmosphere of the Roaring Twenties.
